Karma Kettle brings to you a plethora of options to eat drink and savor on the first day of the Bengali year 1426

Poila Baisakh is considered as the first day of the new year, for Bengalis. ‘Poila’ means first and ‘Baisakh’ means the first month as per the Bengali calendar. “Nababarsha” (Bengali translation for new year) calls for a holiday among the Bengali diaspora in India and Bangladesh. According to the lunisolar Bengali calendar, 15th of April marks as the first day of the “Baisakh” month.

The history of Bengali New Year dates back to the Mughal reign of Akbar, when he devised a a new calendar which merged together the Islamic calendar and the historical Bengali calendar for the people who were entirely dependent on the agricultural products. Therefore, the calendar was named the Bangla calendar and the beginning of the calendar was known as the Poila Baisakh.
